St. Michael’s Catholic Church has stood in Ridge, MD since the 19th century, serving as a spiritual home for countless families. We are grateful to add our wedding to its long story of faith and celebration.

Woodlawn Farm is a place rich with history. The Manor House, Wine Cottage, and Tidewater Barn, which make up the heart of Woodlawn, are nestled close together. Guests will stroll short distances along stone paths and grassy walkways as the celebration unfolds.

Woodlawn Farm: Maryland's Oldest Tidewater Estate

The story of Woodlawn Farm begins with the colonial origins of Maryland in March 1634. Just five months later, on August 30th, Trinity Manor—later known as Woodlawn—was established as the first deeded property in Maryland. The land was granted by Lord Baltimore II to his brother, Leonard Calvert, the colony’s first governor and the leader of the Ark and Dove expedition that brought the first settlers to St. Mary’s City.

During the Revolutionary War, Trinity Manor was plundered by British forces. In the years that followed, Colonel Mathias Clark constructed Woodlawn on its original footprint. By the time of the Civil War, Woodlawn had become a clandestine refuge for Confederate soldiers who escaped from the Union’s Point Lookout prison. From there, they were ferried across the Potomac River to Virginia in small boats. According to local legend, these men were hidden in secret “priest holes”—concealed spaces believed to have been originally designed to shelter Catholic clergy during periods of anti-Catholic persecution.

Early in the 20th Century Woodlawn fell into disrepair. Serial ownership, poor farmland and an isolated peninsular location led to its decline within a region that was also not prospering. The establishment of the Patuxent River Base in 1941, which overlaid Jarboesville, changed the fortunes of the area. However, progress in South County was slow, and another thirty years would pass before Tom and Ginny Cox purchased Woodlawn in 1971 and began its restoration. An 18-year preservation project was launched and in 1990, Woodlawn won the Great American Home Award and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Properties.

In 2016 a new Tidewater Barn was added to the holdings at Woodlawn, in the same style of Maryland Tidewater Architecture which Tom and Ginny preserved. Built by Amish builders, the Tidewater Barn has large plank oak floors and wood plank walls from the nearby Mennonite mills. Today, under the stewardship of Maggie O’Brien and Jim Grube, Woodlawn has grown into a thriving farm and historical inn. The Tidewater Barn now hosts regular music performances, cultural gatherings, and private events, continuing the tradition of blending heritage with community celebration.

Kaitlin and Christian met online in early 2020, not long after both moved back home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kaitlin returned from Lynchburg, Virginia, and Christian from Rochester, New York, where they had attended college. With everything shut down, their first date was a simple walk. Afterward, they each went home—Kaitlin had work to finish for her undergrad, and Christian had homework for his master’s program. But they met up again that same night at a small hangout at a friend's house. Altogether, their first date lasted around six hours. They realized they had grown up just 40 minutes apart in Southern Maryland and had spent their childhoods doing many of the same things: boating, fishing, crabbing, water sports, snowboarding, and camping. As they spent more time together, they also picked up new hobbies like mountain biking, dirt biking, and recreational aviation. They bonded over their shared love of the outdoors and adventure, and it didn’t take long before they knew they had found something really special. A few years later, Christian planned a weekend getaway to Lovingston, Virginia, close to Lynchburg, where Kaitlin went to college and one of her favorite areas. Christian personally flew them both in his plane to Lynchburg, making the trip even more meaningful. He booked an Airbnb just steps from the Lovingston Winery and planned a day of visiting some of Kaitlin’s favorite spots. One of the highlights was a hike to Crabtree Falls, the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. But when they arrived, the parking lot and entire trail were completely covered in ice, making for a very slippery and unforgettable hike. They stopped at a scenic overlook of the falls, and that’s when Christian started acting a little nervous. Before Kaitlin could fully process what was happening, he got down on one knee and pulled out a stunning green sapphire ring—exactly what Kaitlin had dreamed of. She had always wanted a ring that reminded her of evergreen forests and lush, thriving life—something peaceful and a grounded energy. On the way back down the trail, Kaitlin couldn’t help but show everyone they passed her new ring. It was the perfect proposal for them: adventurous, memorable, and full of love.

Our Story

Jewel and Kaitlin first crossed paths as interns at Pax River Naval Base and realized they attended the same university. She is incredibly kind and sweet, with a gift for listening, making her not only a wonderful friend, but someone Kaitlin has always trusted and deeply valued.

Christian’s older brother, co-best man, and lifelong compass. Nick has always been a great role model—thoughtful, dependable, and steady. He’s been there through every chapter of Christian’s life, guiding, grounding, and always showing up when it matters most.

Meghan and Kaitlin met through Christian and his brothers, as they all went to the same high school together. Her artistic spirit and thoughtful outlook bring a unique energy to every adventure, always encouraging those around her to see life from new and inspiring perspectives.

Christian’s younger brother and co-best man, Luke is the big brain behind the bow tie and the go-to guy for fixing just about anything—from ovens to airplanes. His sharp mind, quick wit, and unique perspective make him one of a kind. Whether it’s offering advice, cracking a joke, or jumping in to help, Luke is always there when Christian needs him.

From the moment I met Brigid, she instantly felt like family. She’s one of the kindest, most genuine people I know, and the way she cares for those around her truly stands out. I chose Brigid to be a bridesmaid because of the closeness both Christian and I feel to her, and because she and her family have been so supportive of us from the very beginning. They’ve played such a special role in helping us grow together as a couple. Christian always says that Brigid is like a big sister to him.

Near Woodlawn: Several Airbnbs and Inns offer a rural, scenic stay while remaining highly convenient—just a 10-minute drive to the wedding location. Pax River Area: Hotels outside the Patuxent River gates provide comfortable accommodations, about a 20-minute drive from the venue. Maryland’ First Settlement: Visit Historic St. Mary’s City, founded in 1634, it was the first European settlement of the Maryland Colony and was the fourth oldest permanent settlement in British North America. Floor speeches get the attention, but committees are where the real governing happens—questioning witnesses, debating issues, and shaping bills before they ever reach a vote.Visitors can attend Senate and House committee hearings by checking the public schedule on Congress.gov and arriving early at the listed committee room in the Capitol Hill office buildings. Most hearings are open to the public, with doors opening about 15 minutes before the start time, and seating available on a first‑come basis.
